Application Information

The Graduate Certificate in Bioinformatics is ideally suited for students accepted and matriculated into a UD Graduate Degree Program. Please contact bioinformatics@udel.edu for application information.

Motivation

Sharing the same Bioinformatics Science Core curriculum, the Graduate Certificate is ideally suited for working professionals who cannot make a commitment to the BICB-MS or PSM program, but can use the Certificate as a stepping stone. The Certificate can also complement other UD degree programs, allowing current graduate students to gain bioinformatics knowledge and skills. The Computational Sciences Concentration (CS) allows students to gain knowledge in developing bioinformatics methods, tools and/or databases for modern biotechnology or medicine. The Life Concentration (LSC) allows students with strong biological background to gain knowledge and research experience in applying bioinformatics methods, tools and databases as an integral approach to life science research.

Degree Requirements (Browse Courses)

The Graduate Certificate in Bioinformatics requires 15 credits in the Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Core courses to achieve core competency in Bioinformatics. The course curriculum consists of five graduate level courses that can be taken in any order. Each course will be offered annually during either Fall or Spring semester.

  • BINF644 Bioinformatics (3 Credits):  Principles of molecular sequence analysis and genome annotation with practical guides to bioinformatics resources, databases and tools
  • BINF694 Systems Biology (3 Credits): Bioinformatics interpretation and biological network analysis of omics data from next-generation sequencing (genomics, transcriptomics) and other high-throughput technologies
  • BINF640 Databases for Bioinformatics (3 Credits): Principles and techniques of bioinformatics database development cycle from data modeling to relational database management and web hosting
  • STAT656 Biostatistics (3 Credits): Research designs, review of inference and regression, categorical data, logistic regression, rates and proportions, sample size determination.
  • Introduction to Discipline – Life/Computational Science Concentration (3 Credits): See course listing

Life Science and Computational Science Concentration allows students to gain knowledge in applying bioinformatics methods, tools and databases as an integral approach to modern biotechnology or medicine.
