Katie Lakofsky coordinates the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology education program, including student recruitment, admission and advising. Katie directs the Center’s outreach activities, including development of outreach materials and organizing events. Katie also provides the necessary logistics to the research faculty with regard to the graduate program coordination, planning, scheduling and other program related activities.
Before joining the center, Katie was involved in an array of diverse research projects. Her Graduate thesis work utilized biochemical and immunohistochemistry techniques to identify and investigate proteins involved in the plant-nematode interaction. While working in industry, her initial research efforts focused on creating natural product libraries from plant roots and cultivating and sequencing fastidious microbes using patented technology. She then transitioned into biofuel production, specifically in the identification and development of a novel microbe capable of producing alcohol at high temperature.
